India's Growing Long-Form Content Landscape: A Success Story

India's Growing Long-Form Content Landscape

The Indian digital content ecosystem has witnessed an exciting evolution, with creators across genres captivating audiences and building loyal fanbases. When gaming sensation Ajendra Variya, known as "Total Gaming" on YouTube, revealed his identity last year, his video was viewed 36 million times, underscoring the influence of content creators. Similarly, educators like Vikas Divyakriti, Alakh Pandey, and Vijender Masijeevi have transcended classrooms to become cultural icons. In fact, videos related to Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam preparation garnered over 6.5 billion views in the year ending July 2024.

Beyond gaming and education, comedians like Kenny Sebastian, Raunaq Rajani, Kumar Varun, and Varun Thakur are leveraging their creativity to establish personal brands, sell out live performances, and even market merchandise. In an era dominated by short-form content and dwindling attention spans, long-form video content remains a stronghold for creators who aim to engage deeply with their audiences.

The Rise of Long-Form Content

While short-form content enjoys massive popularity for its quick, bite-sized appeal, long-form videos have proven to be equally impactful in building trust, loyalty, and value for brands. This format is championed by leading creators like Ajay Nagar (CarryMinati), Ashish Chanchalani, and Bhuvan Bam, among others. Notably, India now boasts an estimated 300-500 creators who have achieved YouTube's coveted Gold Play Button for channels with over a million subscribers.

Economic Contributions and Opportunities

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan recently highlighted the platform’s economic impact in India, noting that the creator economy has generated ₹16,000 crore and created 7,50,000 jobs. The number of Indian YouTube channels earning over ₹1,00,000 annually grew by 10% in 2023. With monetization avenues such as memberships, merchandise sales, and fan funding, creators are exploring diverse revenue streams beyond traditional advertisements.

Advantages of YouTube for Creators

Drishiti Sharma, a self-help content creator with over 429,000 subscribers, emphasizes YouTube's stability compared to other platforms. She explains that YouTube's search engine optimization (SEO) capabilities, evergreen algorithms, and monetization options, including AdSense, brand deals, and memberships, make it a reliable choice. Creators can optimize older videos to remain discoverable, enhancing their long-term value.

Brand Collaborations and Niche Content

Long-form content's complexity and niche focus have made it a preferred medium for brands seeking high-impact marketing. Channels like ThinkSchool, which delve into topics such as finance, geopolitics, and education, have partnered with major brands like Odoo and Skillshare. Co-founder Ganeshprasad Sridharan notes that long-form content drives trust and recall value, making it especially lucrative for brand integrations.

Future Trends

Looking ahead, trends like geo-targeted campaigns, affiliate marketing, and live shopping are expected to further shape the long-form content space. Mansi Gupta, Chief Business Officer at influencer marketing agency OpraahFx, highlights how artificial intelligence is transforming content creation through tools for editing and thumbnail design.

India’s long-form content ecosystem is poised for continued growth, driven by creators' innovative storytelling and brands' increasing reliance on this format to forge meaningful connections with audiences. From gaming and education to comedy and business insights, the future of long-form content in India looks promising.
